AU: Your Future Was Me [@ivananddmitri]
Grins like these are rare, usually fleeting, but Ivan is always the one to coax them from her. The expression warms her, and his grin simply highlights the features she knows as well as her own. She looks down at the water, happy, for once, in the moment. “один, два, три,” she calls, waiting only for the second before jumping, dragging Ivan with her. The water is far colder than she’s expecting, but it’s invigorating the perfect balm to her aching muscles.
Know full well that she would not be able to wait until finishing the numerical sequence, Ivan time his jump in tandem with hers. Even with the impact and the water rushing around them, the surface high above their heads, their hands remained locked in their lover’s clutch. Feeling the chill of the ocean was, funny enough, just what he needed to chase away his melancholy musings. Rising to the surface with her, he flashed another smile, unable to remember the last time he had been able to must so many in such short intervals. Their heads bobbing above the water, his body closer to hers, he wrapped his free arm around her smiling as he completely closed the gap between them, their chests pressed together as he looked into her eyes, the water around them becoming still as it calmed from the wake of their impact. He locked eyes with her, their faces so close as to make their lips barely parted, and spoke perhaps the truest words he ever had, and their utterance was barely a whisper, though he knew she’d hear it well,
“Я люблю тебя, Natalia Romanova.”
Natasha had heard it said once that there are few moments in life which are absolutely perfect - and those that are exist as such because they’re fleeting. Because the waves will always rush in, memories fade, beauty fades even faster, and the world will continue spinning whether for good or for bad.
Closing the most negligible and yet suddenly most important of distances between them, Natasha’s kiss is steady and certain despite the onslaught of thoughts which plague her. “Я люблю тебя, Ivan Borskov,” she answers equally soft, breath warm on his lips.
