AU: Your Future Was Me [@ivananddmitri]

Having given up the afternoon to the release they’ve both been needing, Natasha finds herself curved against Ivan’s side, hand resting on his chest. Her body aches pleasantly, enough to curve her mouth into a satisfied smile with every movement she makes, and she can close her eyes knowing that for now, they’re as safe as they ever are.

Tracing her fingers over his chest - the movements are nonsensical, but the power beneath her hands never fails to thrill her - she speaks. She’s always been impatiently moving from one thing to the next, and not even the peace of the moment can suppress that. “What next?”

Natalia’s eagerness to start something else brought out a light chuckle from Ivan. She had always been the one to keep the ball rolling while Ivan preferred to appreciate the pauses between events, however brief. “I honestly haven’t given it much thought. One of the good things about being on vacation can be that there’s nothing in particular that needs doing. Still, knowing you, we’ll think of something eventually. For now, however, why don’t we try something new for the two of us?” He turned his head to look into her eyes, his own eyes smiling as wide as the grin on his face. He then left a quick, affectionate kiss upon her lips before continuing.

“Let’s try to enjoy the moment together. Just for a little while.” His gaze returned to the ceiling as he continued, ‘Sometimes…I think we spend too much time on the move. Perhaps I’m just becoming a sentimental old man….but, recently, there have been times, Natalia, where….I just wish there was more for us than the life we’ve been living. Or perhaps, what I wish for is that there was less.”

Natasha rolls her eyes at the beginning of the sentiment - she is always the driving force, the unstoppable force to Ivan’s immoveable object - but as he continues, she realises that he’s serious. She turns slightly in the bed, affording herself a view of his features, gauging his response.

“We don’t get to give this up, Ivan.” Her fingers stroke lightly across his forearm now, the touch a balm to her words. “This life gives up on you first. If we stop running, we will never stop fighting for our lives. They’ll be able to find us at any time. You know what happens when we stand still.”

Yes, of course she’s thought about it - on nights where she cannot sleep for the pain of her injuries, watched Ivan lie awake too. When she’s dug bullets from their shoulders and been awoken by the crash that signifies another foolish attempt to take them out. However, if she doesn’t do this… what else is there for her?
