You know…
“That you were in surgery,” Natasha answers simply, coming to take a seat next to the bed. Ellis looks… terrible, in fact, a far cry from the efficient, intelligent agent she has known. “Are you able to tell me more, or would you rather sleep?” There are no guards on the door - needed elsewhere in the compound according to the conversation between the nurses while she’d walked in - and Natasha will be staying either way.
“Wow. The grapevine actually speaks truth.” Ellis tried to look surprised, but it was hard to muster without just sounding slightly bored. Honestly, he was expecting something like he’d been clinging to the edge of life. Mind, being unconscious and all, that could’ve been true. “No… too much sleeping.” He answered quietly. As he moved to sit up, pain shot through his entire body, and he submitted back to the pillows. He thought these painkillers were the good stuff…
“I uh… An agent was compromised. And I got attacked unawares. Shot in the knee… wrist.. Dislocated shoulder.. broken nose. I don’t feel too hot right now.” He murmured, trying to hide the fear from his tone. Romanoff probably wouldn’t appreciate that. Stay strong. You’ll walk again. “Managed to warn others… Managed to shoot him in the shoulder.. Stabbed him in the knee with a letter opener. Pretty proud of that one..”
“Stranger things have happened,” Natasha remarks wryly, sitting back on the seat. She nods at the details - nothing she hasn’t heard a thousand times, although she files them away for later - and she manages a small smile at the letter opener part of the story.
“It might interest you to know that you’ve alighted upon the one office item turned weapon I’ve never used,” she tells him, trying to assess just what he isn’t telling her. The injury list is extensive, yes, but there’s a worry there. Intriguing. It’s habit, for Natasha, to catalogue the weaknesses of the people around her, just as habitually as she does their strengths.
“How long will you be out of action?”
