Breaking In, Shaping Up, Then Checking Out [@banner-and-barton]
Natasha sighs, eyes darting about the room as she leans forward. “If it’s the best way to complete the mission, I’ll be doing it,” she tells him, taking a sip from her freshly replaced bottle. “I wasn’t asking your permission, Clint.”
She’s irrationally irritated by his response - she’s been stuck behind paperwork for so long that she’s simply desperate to get back into the field in any way she can. He’s not her minder, as he seems to believe himself to be. “This is my operation, to run as I see fit.”
After a moment, she relents, drumming her fingers on the table. “They won’t kill me. Too much history. They’ll want to torture me first. That’ll buy enough time for retrieval.”
“You know that I won’t let that happen, Natasha.”, he said quietly, looking over to the woman, knowing she wouldn’t take his advice. He knew that she had her own ways to do things, but he didn’t want her to get hurt. If anything, then Clint wanted to protect her. Being silly with this thought, he knew that Natasha would have laughed at him for this. But he meant it.
It wasn’t easy being close to her, he had to give her that. Simply because he had her own will and she was very eager to get this through. She wasn’t the kind of person to avoid situations that could harm her, as wasn’t Clint. They were the same when it came to this and that’s what made it difficult for the archer to follow his goal. Protecting Natasha from bad things.
“Maybe we can find another way.”, he tried to convince her to stop being so selfless, wanting herself to get most possibly hurt in all this. Because he never wanted her hurt. He wanted her to be okay.
Natasha catches her own tell, stilling her fingers against the table. She can hear the desire to persuade her of his point of view in his words, but she’s set on her course - because he’s not the only one who wants to protect his partner. Everything she does is designed to ensure his safety, in the hope that one day her debt will be repaid.
She looks up at him, raising an eyebrow. “Another way? If you have a suggestion, I will listen. If not, this is done my way. As I’m running the mission, it’s my choice.” This is something she would only do for him - willing to take on his counsel if he’s able to offer it. She’s secure in her own instincts, but she’s well aware that her insistence on relying on them can blind her to other avenues.
